May Day 2026: Unity of the Proletarian and Anti-Imperialist Movement!

This year's May Day, international day of struggle of the working class, was also in many places in Austria an expression of the intensifying contradictions on the international stage, the opposition to imperialist war, and the current tasks of the revolutionary elements of the workers' movement. Given these circumstances, it was a significant achievement that this year, that particularly the unity of the proletarian and anti-imperialist movements was demonstrated and defended. The recently founded International Anti-Imperialist League (AIL) played a key role in this.

Declarations for May Day 2026

In the lead-up to 1st of May, many communist, revolutionary, and anti-imperialist organizations published declarations. We would particularly like to highlight the international declarations of the Anti-Imperialist League [LINK] and also of the International Communist League (ICL) [LINK], which are important guideposts in defining the current political tasks of the proletarian and anti-imperialist movement worldwide. The latter states:

The communists everywhere in the world face two urgent tasks. First and foremost, to defend the red banner of Marxism-Leninism-Maoism flying in India, to close rank with the Communist Party of India and to raise the support of the People’s War it leads to new levels, fighting back the converging attack of Imperialism, Revisionism and Reaction. Secondly, to impulse the worldwide anti-imperialist mobilization, raising its combativeness through actions that sweep away the legalistic and reformist shackles that opportunism and revisionism tries to impose, by unleashing the just rage of the Masses, especially supporting the struggles against imperialist aggression and for national liberation of the nations and Peoples in Latin America and the Middle East, which are the basic aspect.“

This statement also provides a helpful clarification regarding the definition of unity within the anti-imperialist front: „Those who have assumed a firm position in deeds for the national resistance against US- imperialist and Zionist aggression, in defense of the right of national self-determination, objectively stand on the side of the anti-imperialist front and must be supported as long as they maintain this stand.“

In this context, we would also like to draw your attention to a call to action from the ADRV for May Day, which we have already published [LINK].

May Day Demonstration in Vienna: Defending Anti-Imperialist Unity

This year's internationalist May Day demonstration in Vienna was relatively well-attended, with several thousand participants. A particularly striking feature this year was a large contingent of hundreds of demonstrators who showed their anti-imperialist solidarity with the oppressed peoples and nations in the Middle East, especially Palestine. Part of the demonstration was a „unity of action“ that also included anti-imperialists from Palestine, the Philippines, Iran, Venezuela, Greece, India, and the former Yugoslavia, many carrying their own symbols and flags. The defense of national sovereignty and the right to self-determination against imperialist attacks, particularly those of the USA in conjunction with Israel, was a defining aspect of this group. This also included condemning the imperialist rulers in Austria and the EU, who, among other things, participate in these aggressions through arms deliveries. The attempt by certain forces to exclude this part from the demonstration was successfully repelled by the resolute defense of the anti-imperialist unity. Members of the „unity of action“ carried a banner with the AIL emblem and the inscription "Anti-imperialists of the world – unite!", as well as a banner with the slogan "Zionism is fascism!"

Linz: New forces were mobilized.

With red flags and anti-imperialist slogans, proletarian, international solidarity was upheld at the May Day demonstration in Linz. Although this year's internationalist May Day demonstration was relatively small in terms of attendance, it was precisely this message - the unity of the proletarian and anti-imperialist movements - that attracted new forces and gave a definite and firm expression to the revolutionary character of May Day. Alongside a banner from the AIL, banners featuring the classics of Marxism were carried: Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin, and Mao. The aim of May Day was to place the worldview of the working class at the forefront, because without ideological and theoretical clarity, the working class has never been able to achieve gains and victories.

Innsbruck: Many joined the anti-imperialists!

In Innsbruck, around 2,000 people participated in the May Day demonstration, making it the largest in recent years. It was clear that shifting the burden of the crisis onto the working stratas of the people and attacking the people's democratic rights will indeed have consequences for those in power.

A particularly prominent anti-imperialist contingent stood out, joined by around one hundred demonstrators. Banners were carried, among others, by the Palestine Initiative Tyrol (PIT) which was also directed against Austria hosting the Eurovision Song Contest. Many unorganized people also joined the anti-imperialists, which is pointing out the potential and momentum of the anti-imperialist movement. A banner of the International Anti-Imperialist League (AIL), founded in April, was also prominently carried. Towards the end, slogans highlighting the classics of communism and defending Maoism could be heard from this group.

New struggles, new victories: Deepen the anti-imperialist unity!

This year's May Day calls upon the revolutionary forces with all their might to further consolidate and deepen anti-imperialist unity! The successes achieved on this May Day – strengthening the unity of the proletarian and anti-imperialist movement – must serve as a basis for further steps, for further progress, for further victories!

Long live May Day!
